THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
February 23, 2005 - Vol 8, No 8
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.

The new series inches ever closer. Which is another way to say that
no news about the series run has come out since the last week's
column. Rumors of course. Film crews from the BBC and the CBC were
at the Gallifrey One convention http://www.gallifreyone.com ,
presumably getting footage for documentaries or features on the new
show. American Who & Sci-Fi Overdrive http://www.scifioverdrive.com
were also at the convention and were expected to focus part of their
next audio shows on it.
WYBE 35 Philadelphia, PA http://www.wybe.org is saying its goodbyes to Doctor Who fans as their rights to the series end after the February 26 broadcast. A commercial is airing on the station saying how many Doctors and stories they have aired as they bid the show a fond farewell. In an e-mail to viewers, they wrote:

Thanks for your e-mail. Unfortunately, Dr. Who is scheduled to end soon. We no longer have the rights to air it. The BBC has decided to shop it around to commercial stations. If they have no success, I'm sure they will offer it again to public television and that WYBE would be very interested in airing it again.

I hope you enjoy Red Dwarf!

Sincerely,
Donna Grims
Programming Coordinator
WYBE Public Television

Ironically enough, WYBE premiered Doctor Who on Saturday March 6, 1999. WHYY 12 (the better known PBS station in Philadelphia) decided to premiere the first 5 episodes of Red Dwarf VIII in a marathon at the same time. Now, Red Dwarf will air 2 episodes on WYBE Saturdays as Doctor Who's replacement.
WILL 12 Urbana, IL http://www.will.uiuc.edu is also saying goodbye to Doctor Who on February 26 as previously announced. They have aired the series on its current run since November 2000, and also had a long run in the 1980s and 90s.
Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org , Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org , and KUED 7 Salt Lake City, UT http://www.kued.org have Doctor Who scheduled into March, and have not announced the end of their runs as of this writing.

Thursday Full Circle pts 3+4 of 4

Series 18, Episodes 9 through 12. Doctor: Tom Baker.
The Time Lords ordered Romana back to Gallifrey. Will the 4th Doctor return her or let her escape? He'll have to find a way out of a pocket universe before any decision can be made. The deciders are having trouble deciding how to protect the people at the coming of Mistfall, with everyone boarding a ship that seems unable to fly.
Friday State of Decay pts 1+2 of 4
Series 18, Episodes 13 through 14. Doctor: Tom Baker.
The Time Lords ordered ... you already know that. Searching for a bright point in this rather dull universe, the 4th Doctor and Romana land on a planet where civilization is decaying and vampires rule. It all seems dangerously familiar.
Saturday Planet of Fire all 4 pts
Series 21, Episodes 13 through 16. Doctor: Peter Davison.
After the events of Resurrection Of The Daleks (which BBC Kids doesn't have the rights to), the Doctor visits Lanzarote to find out ... something or other. Honestly this story never made much sense to me. But you get the introduction of Peri and a return performance by Kamelion.
Sunday The Caves of Androzani all 4 pts
Series 21, Episodes 17 through 20. Doctor: Peter Davison.
The climatic end of the 5th Doctor's era. A visit to Androzani Minor turns tragic. Gun runners, a slightly psychotic robot maker, corrupt military, and a more corrupt President all make each other's lives very unpleasant. Worse, everyone seems eager to end the Doctor's life. But the greatest menace is the one you don't expect. One that doesn't think, doesn't feel, doesn't live. And it's about to nail a Time Lord and his companion.
Monday State of Decay pts 3+4 of 4
Series 18, Episodes 15 through 16. Doctor: Tom Baker.

Saturday 11:30PM EST The Keys Of Marnius ep 6 of 6 (The Keys Of Marinus)

Series 1, Episodes 25 through 26. Doctor: William Hartnell.
Since episode 5 aired by accident last week instead of episode 4, it remains unclear exactly which episodes will air. WYBE has a long proud history of accidentally airing the wrong episodes, and it seems oddly appropriate that Doctor Who ends its run in mild confusion. But sit back with some popcorn and some friends and cheer the Doctor on his final night in the Philadelphia area. And thank you to WYBE for 6 years of time travelling sci-fi excitement.
